Scenario Questions (Task) on Temporary and Permanent Changes

ITEM 1

Due to rising global temperatures caused by climate change, glaciers in the Arctic region have been melting at an alarming rate. Recently, a massive piece of ice  roughly the size of a city block - broke away from a glacier in Greenland. Over the course of several days, it drifted into warmer ocean waters and completely melted into liquid water. This event sparked concern among scientists, as it not only contributed to rising sea levels but also highlighted the accelerating impact of global warming.

Task

As a Chemistry Learner:
  • Categorize the change that occurred to the ice.
  •  Explain the characteristics of this change.
  •  Evaluate the types of changes that can occur in matter

ITEMS 2

Lake Albert, Uganda's deepest lakes experienced a significant drop  in water level due to increased evaporation intensified by rising temperatures. Local communities relying on the lake for fishing, irrigation, and drinking water have been impacted. Scientists are concerned about the long-term effects on the lake’s biodiversity and the regional climate.

Task:

As a chemist, advise the other scientists on;
  • The category of change that occurred to the lake.
  • Characteristics of these type of changes and their applications in day-to-day life.

ITEM 3

A neglected bicycle left outside for several months underwent significant transformations. Initially, the steel frame had a shiny, silver surface. However, exposure to rain, humidity, and oxygen led to the formation of orange-brown spots. The owner of the bicycle is wondering what would have happened to his bicycle and has approached you for guidance.

Task:

 As a chemistry learner;
  • Guide him on the category of change that took place when he neglected the bicycle.
  • Tell him more on the characteristics of these type of changes.
  • Advise him on the practical applications of these changes.
